Juneathon Day 21 (Wimped) and 22 (Ran!)

Yeah, yesterday I still didn’t have my mojo back.  It got to half past eleven so I did another Gorilla app workout and went to bed.

6 repeats of:

  • 15 squats
  • 5 crunchs

Today I actually got up after my alarm went off at five.  I probably would have switched it off and rolled over the but the littlest Less started grouching so I got up to check on her.  She had lost her blanket but was happy to be tucked back in and went back to sleep immediately.  Oh, it is so much easier, if less snuggly, that the days of babies when they would need to be fed, rocked and sang if there was to be any hope of more sleep.

But I was up anyway so off I went for a speedy 5k.  Speedy for me, that is.  I felt like I was running just above my comfort level for the whole thing so that’s good.  I hope.  I really want to push on, to run a bit faster but I find I’m having to convince myself that a little discomfort is ok.  I think I associate being out of breath with not being able to run another step when in fact it is possible to be a bit puffed and still keep going.  I still had it in me to speed up a bit for the last half km so there must have been something left in the tank.

Juneathon – Day 13

Hurrah and hurrah again.  Two good things today.  First, the sun is out and there is blue sky.  Granted it isn’t actually all that warm but I really don’t care.  Sunny and dry is good with me.  Second, I managed a new personal best for my Wednesday 5k!  Right down to 35:19.  Oh so close to 35 minutes.  Very close.

But progress has been amazing recently. It’s almost as if by doing some exercise every day I am actually getting fitter.  What a surprise!

Of course, as soon as the sun begins to shine my daughter demands that she is slathered in sun screen.  I feel as though I should definitely encourage this so I do even though I’m not convinced it’s going to be all that sunny today.  And isn’t she meant to be indoors at school learning stuff?  I tried a new sun cream on her that is meant to last for 8 hours.  I wouldn’t be surprised if it really did, it’s so sticky.  Ah, for my far off youth when no one had heard of melanomas and shedding a layer of burnt skin was just a sign of summer beginning.  It was easier then.  Dangerous, very dangerous and also stupid but easier.

Triumph and Qualms: Juneathon – Day 6

Ah, such a strange day it turned out to be.

My home scales reaffirmed what I already knew – that eating nonstop for a week had caused me to put on a few pounds.  No surprise there at all.

Then, not despondent but not exactly up beat either, I went for my Wednesday 5k.  I have been trying to work on my speed because, dear god, I could not get any slower.  Yesterday I tried to run a bit faster than usual for just over a mile and it was hard, hard, hard.  But doable.  Today I thought I would set out at that pace and see how far I could get.  It turns out I could manage the whole 5km at that pace (7:25 min/km).  Hurrah!  I was deliriously happy.  That’s the fastest 5km I’ve ever run.

And so I went to the Wednesday weigh in with a happy heart.  Oh yes, the scales wouldn’t have good news for me but what the hell.  I can run 5km in under 40 minutes!  But the scales turned up a two pound loss!  How can that be?  Seriously now, that makes no sense at all.  Unless the secret to weight loss is huge slabs of malteser cake?  Seems unlikely.  A couple of the other people at the meeting had similar unexpected losses.  We wondered if the scales were wacky and next week it will come back to bite us when we all weigh heavier than we expected.

Still, don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.  I shall take this as a welcome reprieve and grin like a loon because of the 5k time.

Not There Yet

One of these days I am going to run a sub 40 minute 5k.  One day.  I do realise that I can pretty much walk faster than I can run.  Sad but true.  Sad but increasingly less true and that’s what I have to hold on to.

Today was hot and I was tired.  And so a minute slower than my last 5k.  Pollyanna that I try to be I am telling myself that I my muscles were tired from other exercise so the next 5k will definitely be faster.
